DIY SWING - WITH RYOBI
Hello Lovelies,
Today I’m going to share a little DIY project I’ve done for Christie with the help of RYOBI Power Tools.
As its summer time and all the kiddies love to play outside I’ve decided to make a gorgeous wooden rope swing,Christie is obsessed with swings at the moment so this is perfect for her.
For my little project I picked up the amazing Ryobi tools which are really easy to use even for us mamas so dont be scared of this project! Ryobi tools are user friendly and very affordable compared to others I have used on D.I.Y projects. They are available at Bunnings which is great as there's one on every corner now..haha
Now lets get into this little project, which is perfect for you all to do over the weekend, get the whole family involved and even the kiddies can help decorate at the end. ( Kids not to use or be near power tools at any time please)
I don’t know about you but, I've always wanted a tree swing, call me a sucker for fairytale American style movies and how they show gorgeous tree houses and tree swings. I simply adore them, but we have never lived in a place that had a tree big and strong enough to support a swing let alone have a big back yard. If you're lucky enough to have a big back yard with a gorgeous and sturdy tree this will look stunning hanging off the tree in summer time, oh and if you do have a big tree and make this project then please let me come visit and have a swing. 😊
The amazing thing about this DIY project is that you can also hang it indoors, in the kiddies play room or bedroom. Have it as décor piece or for them to sit and softly swing on. Just make sure when you are screwing them into the ceiling you are screwing on studs and using appropriate brackets and screws, otherwise these can easily be looped over a tree, pergola or even an arch you may have in your home.
Wherever you decide to hang it, it’s sure to provide hours of fun!
TOOLS: Ryobi – Compound Miter Saw Ryobi – Jig Saw Ryobi – ONE+ 18V Drill Driver Ryobi – Sander 1/8 Drill bit (to pre dill holes) |
MATERIALS: |
METHOD:
1. From your large timber piece, using your tape measure, measure out the main seat {60x25 for the main seat}, then measure out the two side pieces you will need {x2 - 7.2 x 25 }.
2. Using the RYOBI COMPOUND MITRE SAW, adjust the saw angle to be on 0 degree {this will allow you to cut a straight line with the saw} and cut the main piece for the swing {60x25). Set aside and continue to cut the two end pieces as measured out (x2 – 7.2 x 25 cm} leaving the saw adjustment setting as previously.
3. Using the RYOBI ONE+ 18V DRILL DRIVER with a 1/8th drill bit pre-drill holes onto the the main piece at each end, this is to prevent the wood from splitting when screwing the two end pieces onto the main seat.
Add the two end pieces to each end of the main swing with the pre drilled holes at the bottom and the two end pieces on top of the main piece.
Use a clamp if needed to hold the pieces to prevent them from moving, flip over and again using the RYOBI ONE+ 18V DRILL DRIVER screw the pieces on from the bottom. Make sure the pieces are flush and do not move while drilling. We used 3 screws on each side. It doesn't matter if the screws are visible as this will be the bottom of the swing.
4. Flip the swing seat over and the two end pieces should now be secured to the top of the swing creating a seat and side pieces.
5. Using the paper measure out the with of the swing and then create your end piece design (as above image). Cut the piece out and transfer design to the two end pieces drawing them onto the end.
7. Measure out 4 holes, two on each end on the top of the side pieces where the rope will be threaded through. Make sure they are even on both sides.
8. Using the RYOBI HAND DRILL add the spade attachment and drill the 4 holes, two on each end of the swing to fit through the rope.
9. Using the RYOBI SANDER, first with the rough sheet, then with the soft sheet, smooth out all the edges of the swing and smoothing out the end sides too. Go over the whole swing to ensure there are no rough pieces. You can now also make the design to the end more rounded or pointy if you wish.
10. Once finished dust of swing and paint to your desired color or keep it raw. I choose to paint mine white, this also helped camouflage any minor imperfections there may be.
11. Once dried thread through two pieces of rope on each end and securing them under the seat with a knot at each end. You can also tie the two ends together before threading through the seat.
12. Add the cushion to the seat (I made my own) and dress with any décor pieces you wish.
13. The swing is now ready to be hung Indoors or out.
[ Please Note: Swing was used for styling purposes on the pergola. Do not hang the swing near or above steps or un-even surfaces. Max weight is 60kg or depending on the rope size you choose it will indicate the weight. Height of the swing can be adjusted accordingly with the extra rope left under the swing. To hang the swing you will also need appropriate hooks that will fit the rope to be looped inside and attached to wherever you will hang it.
The swing should always be secured appropriately before using and you should always be in arms reach when child is using the swing. All sizes can be adjusted to fit the size and style you wish. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Instead of buying timber you can use leftover timber pieces from previous projects like we did or search for scrap pieces from local timber/cabinet makers. ]
